What is a tech editor?

A tech editor is someone who will look through a designer’s pattern for them; they check that it has all the instructions it should, find maths errors, and sure the style is consistent. This way, the designer knows that it’s ready for knitters when it’s published! A tech editor doesn’t rewrite the pattern themselves, just points out potential errors or makes suggestions for changes that will improve the clarity and usability of the pattern. This ensures that no changes are made without the designer’s approval, which is important to make sure the pattern is still written in the designer’s voice – it is their pattern after all!

Why am I a tech editor?

Not sure if you need a tech editor?

In my opinion, every designer publishing a pattern needs a tech editor! Even if you check everything really carefully yourself, having a fresh pair of eyes look at it is invaluable when you’re trying to spot errors, or decide whether instructions make sense.
